Effect of Working Memory Training on the Improving Reading Performance and Working Memory Capacity in Children with Dyslexia

Abstract:

Introduction: In recent years, researchers have focused on students who have challenges in learning, and these problems effect on their educational process. This study aimed to investigate the effect of working memory training programs on the improving reading performance and working memory capacity in children with dyslexia. Method: The research method was quasi-experimental. In this regard 30 third, fourth and fifth grade students Kerman city available sampling in two experimental groups and control groups in the academia year 2016-2017. Tools used included, Raven Intelligence Scale, reading and dyslexic test and span subtest of the Wechsler memory scale. The experimental group received 25 sessions of 45 minutes working memory training program, then again one month after the test was taken from both groups. While the control group did not receive training in these areas. Results: Data analysis using MANCOVA showed there are significant difference between the experimental group and the control group in terms of reading performance (p<0.05) and working memory (p<0.05).  Conclusion: working memory interventions such as learning reading basic skills can be an effective approach to improve reading learning disabilities.
